When I started my Inspiration Is Everywhere series I wasn’t expecting to draw as much from nature as I have been. For a bit of fun and to indulge my curiosity of what inspires others, I opened the month of July up to you. Many thanks to those who participated on Facebook by submitting their photos for this month’s muse of Inspiration Is Everywhere. The winner is Abby with her lovely lake snapshot.
Aside from the serene gracefulness of this tranquil body of water, warm sand in the foreground with rolling hills and clouds in the distance, this image immediately registered in my designer brain as your classic Complimentary color relationship of Blue and Orange. What better room to capture the peacefulness of this image than a space to sleep? Behold, July’s “Lakeside Cottage” bedroom.
Qualities of a Lakeside Cottage are relaxed, unassuming, and nuanced with character. Details such as shiplap walls, the metal bed, and folksy area rug all contribute to this overall aesthetic. “Antique” pieces that exude a sense of time, such as the dresser, knobby slate blue pillow, and rusty pitcher, play their part in perfect harmony with the natural elements of seagrass Roman shades, heron figurine, and cotton floral arrangement. A ceramic lamp adds an artisan touch atop a painted nightstand and partnered with striped linen bedding that are fundamentally cottage. Nautical artwork, hooked throw pillow, and lanterns emphasize the Lakeside concept with subtlety. I prefer to carefully add these touches as clever accents rather than a full-blown “theme” to maximize the longevity of the design.
