While working as the in-house designer for a local remodeling company, I contributed to the renovation of this antique colonial in Dunbarton, New Hampshire. Although the couple loved the character of this 1897 property, it was clear the kitchen fell short of their aspirations for the house. Our solution was to open the existing family room and garage into an open concept kitchen-living-dining space, complete with butler’s pantry, mudroom, and oversized storage closet. The porch was extended to create a sense of entry on this side of the house, and the attached barn was modified in order to function as the new garage.
One challenge this project presented was how to best finish the floor of this open concept space given that it was once a concrete slab. A blend of refined and rustic engineered hardwood hickory was utilized, not only for its durability, but to compliment and honor the history of this house.
